Ceramics

I work primarily in porcelain and stoneware, firing at cone 10 reduction in a gas kiln. I have lately been using the medium for political expression and formal experimentation. I continue to produce and sell functional work.

Time Capsule: Horror

Year: 2025

Size: 10" x 5"

Media: Porcelain, cone 10 reduction

One piece in an ongoing series of sculptural tear gas canisters created to catalog the current sociopolitical moment. My background in archaeological fieldwork has shown me that, if not deliberately pulverized, ceramic survives millennia. Cataloging the facts of this moment, and the subjective, lived experiences of the artist and the artist's peers, forces the future to reckon with the fact that its history is made of people with rich inner lives, and that this political moment was felt, fought, and feared.

Hatching

Year: 2024

Size: 10.5" x 6.5"

Media: Stoneware, raku

This piece was raku fired, which in of itself carries meaning: a rapid, super-heated firing, a kind of jailbreak from itself and sudden dive into rebirth. The form (and the techniques required to achieve it) came to me in response to great introspection about the insignificance of labels. There is great freedom in floating past names for oneself. The work undulates from the ground, shimmering light through its dynamic, gentle curvature. It aches inward, all curves bending toward its identity, secretive without pretension or apology, but self-assured in its preparedness to be the only one that knows itself. It is a deeply private object, stepping into a new, nameless existence, with or without a prying observer.
